The Aspen chairs are the newest addition to the Alice Lane showroom – rugged and manly but still sleek and modern with clean lines and a metal frame. We can’t help our obsession with these details! When placed in a room, don’t hide the backs of these chairs, the detail is too great! They would be perfect as the guest chairs in an office or floating in a living room.

Stop by and see them for yourself. They’re even better in person!

Spending a week in Highpoint, NC is a joy of mine twice a year. We go to stay current with the endless possibilities of all that are available or coming available. We get to see what the style makers and designers are forecasting for summer and fall. It’s inspiring in every way!

One thing was undeniable; Pattern is the new black! It is no surprise seeing how our favorite fashion designers have given us patterned pants, shoes, blouses, bags, bold patterned necklaces, etc. Why would our homes be any different? I wanted to share with you all the patterns I snapped while at market. They’re everywhere.

The patterns today are more self-confident and spontaneous than ever before!  Don’t be afraid to mix them in your own space(s). Structured patterns look great with free flowing more organic patterns.

You’ll find a movement and rhythm gives your room a beat or a pulse. An easy way to start is with the rug and build upon that. A patterned chair, a textured sofa, art work… Patterned drapes also give back in a big way, and of course, a patterned or textured wall paper is always a great trick.

This season, find a way to incorporate a fresh new pattern into your decor.

Get out there, and find your beat!

After the dreary winter months of over there are talks of what to plant in the garden, Spring cleaning, and just sprucing up around the house. Sometimes you just need something to freshen up your space, and what better place to do it than the first room you see when you walk through the door – your entry. You don’t need to go out and buy all new furniture and repaint to give the space an updated look. Here are a few ideas to give your entry a Spring facelift.

1. Add pattern- Choose something that will be durable. This will be the spot that gets the most traffic in your home. Something with a pattern will be fresh for Spring.

2. Mirror above your console- Adding a mirror with an opinion will give your entry personality and flair. It doesn’t have to be loud, a frame in a neutral color and a great shape will make a statement.

3. Bring the outdoors in - A vase of blooming branches will bring life into your entry. These can be real branches trimmed from your cherry tree or picked up from your local florist. For a long-lasting look, use a few of our fake branches.

4. Brighten things up - Add a new lamp to your console. This is a great way to keep the lighting perfect at night in your entryway. Pretty by day, pretty and functional by night.

5. Put some spunk into it – If you are feeling ambitious or just need a whole new look, switch up your console. The entry is like the “appetizer” for the house so make sure it makes a statement!

Here are a few of our favorite pieces:

1. branches – $13 each  vase – $223  // 2. mirror – $500 // 3. lamp – $900 // 4. 3′-6″ x 5′-6″ rug – $258 // 5. lamp – $1,500 // 6. 4′ x 5′-7″ rug – $98 // 7. mirror – $973

Stop by and let us help you find the perfect refresher pieces for your entry!

Dear beautiful online readers,

If I could give you one tip, one bit of advice about designing a room, it would be this…..pick your rug first!  Why, you ask?  Because it is the biggest player in a space!  Once you pick your rug, be it loud, quiet, colorful, or muted, you’ve dictated what energy the room will have.  The rug is like the border of a puzzle; once you have the border completed, the rest of the jigsaw is soooo much easier!  Once you’ve got this base layer you can start to throw fabrics and finishes on top to see what gels!

Below are two very different  homes we’ve designed and as you can see, the rugs are everything!

Private Residence – Las Vegas, Nevada

Private Residence – St. George, Utah

Your rug will be the largest piece of art you’ll ever buy and art, my friends tells a lot about a person….

Mrs Robinson’s Living Room—Often the room you see shortly after sitting in her entry and the room before you get invited to the heart of their kitchen.  The living room is one of the first opportunities you get to tell your audience what you and your family are all about!  In Mrs. Robinson’s case, it was pretty easy to tell!  The colors of her recently remodeled home were reminiscent of Scandinavia and were as breezy as her personality!  Soft Blues and precious wallpapers lined the hallways and a base layer of rugs and furniture had been purchased but the rooms were not yet finished.  The Robinsons needed the last few but imperative layers to make this house feel like a home!   I present to you, the living room!

The tables, lamps, secretary and chair speak for themselves and in a Beatles like chorus sing…..“Here’s to you Mrs. Robinson”!  I join them.

We have had a lot of fun helping out-of-state clients; while nothing compares to being able to see a client’s home in person,  it’s amazing what we can do with just a few measurements, a slew of photos, and some Pinterest-stalking!

We recently worked with a couple from Colorado. They had just given their walls a fresh coat of grey paint that really made their white moldings just pop.  We were inspired by their vision and hit the ground running, starting with their family room. Our goal was to make a comfortable, inviting space for their family to gather and spend time together.

We kept the beautiful rug they had in the room, and moved their more formal sofa and chairs into the piano room.

The space has many walkways and entrances into the room, so we re-oriented their furniture and introduced both a chaise and a pair of chairs alongside a new sofa. This gave the space a great conversation area, as well as created a relaxing environment to watch TV and enjoy having company over.

We wanted the space to feel gathered and eclectic. We started by anchoring the room with a large steamer trunk for a coffee table. In front of the trunk we placed two tufted ottomans; these little guys are great to pull up to a sofa or chair and put your feet up on, or to use as additional seating in the space. One of the complaints the couple had was that their current sofa looked great but was just wasn’t comfortable. We specified a new sofa from one of our collections that brought a great look to the room but was very family friendly and something they could all sink into.

We kept with neutral tones in the main furniture pieces and introduced different textures and patterns to the palette to create interest and depth. We left our bright punches of color for the pillows and the ottomans. As a finishing touch, we treated the bay window with floor to ceiling linen drapery panels, softening the corner and accentuating the height of the windows.

As an added bonus, our clients happened to be in town when we were ready to present to them- they were able to touch and feel the fabrics we selected for them, as well as sit in some of the pieces were we wanted to put in their space.  We were so excited to show them the cozy space we designed for them and can’t wait for everything to arrive so this relaxing, fun space can be enjoyed by the whole family!
