Happy Earth Day everyone! Bring the arrival of Spring and celebrate Earth Day by adding some greenery to your home – whether it’s just a tiny succulent or a huge vegetable garden in the backyard.

We spotted this lovely at the Hickory Chair showroom at Market today. The fiddle leaf fig tree, a room’s best accessory!

A precious little herb garden in the kitchen provides a pop of life, and what’s better than fresh herbs in a springtime salad?

So what if you don’t have a green thumb. These guys don’t need much help to survive! Just a little bit of water here and there (You could forget about them for months, and they would be fine!) and some sunlight – They’re good to go! Easy peasy!

And we couldn’t resist this one, spotted today at Market. Mother Nature really is!

After the dreary winter months of over there are talks of what to plant in the garden, Spring cleaning, and just sprucing up around the house. Sometimes you just need something to freshen up your space, and what better place to do it than the first room you see when you walk through the door – your entry. You don’t need to go out and buy all new furniture and repaint to give the space an updated look. Here are a few ideas to give your entry a Spring facelift.

1. Add pattern- Choose something that will be durable. This will be the spot that gets the most traffic in your home. Something with a pattern will be fresh for Spring.

2. Mirror above your console- Adding a mirror with an opinion will give your entry personality and flair. It doesn’t have to be loud, a frame in a neutral color and a great shape will make a statement.

3. Bring the outdoors in - A vase of blooming branches will bring life into your entry. These can be real branches trimmed from your cherry tree or picked up from your local florist. For a long-lasting look, use a few of our fake branches.

4. Brighten things up - Add a new lamp to your console. This is a great way to keep the lighting perfect at night in your entryway. Pretty by day, pretty and functional by night.

5. Put some spunk into it – If you are feeling ambitious or just need a whole new look, switch up your console. The entry is like the “appetizer” for the house so make sure it makes a statement!

Here are a few of our favorite pieces:

1. branches – $13 each  vase – $223  // 2. mirror – $500 // 3. lamp – $900 // 4. 3′-6″ x 5′-6″ rug – $258 // 5. lamp – $1,500 // 6. 4′ x 5′-7″ rug – $98 // 7. mirror – $973

Stop by and let us help you find the perfect refresher pieces for your entry!

I am such a seasonal girl; whether winter, spring, summer, or fall, I welcome all with open arms! As soon as the weather starts to change, I always get an itch to throw a party, so naturally, as the summer solstice approached, I sent all my home girls at Alice Lane a lil’ invitation to the FIRST ANNUAL ATTIC TWIST & TWIRL! Everyone chatted about what they’d wear, what we’d eat, and where on earth would I fit everyone in the itty bitty attic!

I had big ideas and a small deck where I wanted everything to take place. After the lights were strung and the tables set, my guests began to arrive. We ate the seasons best; Megan brought potato salad, Christy brought caprese bites, Natalie brought kouign amanns (go to Le Madeline in Salt lake and experience these for yourselves) and Jesi topped it all off with her grandma’s famous Strawberry Rhubarb pie! After dining on the deck, we retired to the garden where we played croquet till dark. It was silly and spontaneous – we even hula hooped!

Once the sun had set, it was time for us to make fairies in a jar! All you do is take an old mason jar, dump glow sticks and diamond glitter inside and shake. It was a riot and with just the right Pandora mix, our party got a little crazy! We danced on the rooftop with the lights and no matter what they say, the accidental lantern fire made everything more exciting!

The hour was late but I didn’t want it to end! We still had one more activity… a gift exchange. I believe that you shouldn’t leave a party empty handed and, as women, we love to give gifts almost as much as we love to receive them. Jess was a big fan of the butterfly net Andrea gave her… Megan was not as amused. Such fun!

It was pure  joy, gathering all of my favorite girls together for a midnight summer’s dream – and that’s exactly what it was, a dream. A twirl. A time to celebrate the season and each other. La chiam!

Cheers to summer!
Suzanne

The Appetizer

one response

An entry is the first impression your guests receive when entering your home. This space becomes the appetizer of what is to come. So why not treat this space a little differently and let your guests wonder and salivate – what’s behind door number two?!

Typically an entry becomes a hallway to another room.  However, there is no reason an entry can’t be functional – and gorgeous (of course!).  We began with the soloist of the space – the console.  This classic French demilune is elongated with clean, smooth lines and tapered legs.  Each door is designed with oval brass rings and grill overlays.  I have truly never seen anything like it!  Both my client and I feel in love!  This console becomes a perfect resting spot for a tray full of keys, a candle, or even a fresh bouquet of flowers just plucked from your garden.

We flanked the console with two Farm Wing Chairs and slipped them into a hand designed Hable fabric. The size and scale of these chairs alone will leave anyone with a lasting impression! Above each Farm Wing Chair we stacked a few pieces of art- this gives the entry a colorful and personal touch. In addition to just being a beautiful, the chairs can also be easily moved into her family room for additional seating when entertaining.

No entry is complete without a mirror. A mirrored surface is not only useful, it’s also beautiful. Silver has a liquid quality that’s incredibly calming and serene – despite its hard veneer. This will become a great little spot to touch up your lipstick or fix those loose hairs before you welcome your friends and family in for a little appetizer of the senses.

Mothers make a house feel like a home. There’s even a certain smell to the house when mom is home. As kids, the first thing we’d yell when we walked in the door from school was, “mAHHHHHHHm!” We’d yell it until she answered. We didn’t need her; we just wanted to know where she was and that she was home.

It always makes me smile when we go into a home to consult for design services and the homeowner requests that we do a toy room in the basement. My advice is always this: Kids won’t go to another floor to play, at least not for very long. They want to be wherever Mom is, and that’s usually in the family room next to the kitchen.

My point is, kids love their moms. Even as adults, we feel most secure and validated when our moms are within reach. We love the sound of their voice, their scent, the smell of their cooking. I even love the smell of my mom’s breath. I know I’m not a kid anymore, but when I go home I am. I walk in the door and yell, “mAHHHHHHm!” until she answers.

Love you, Momma!

Spring brings a want to refresh and renew! Out with the old in with the new! A whole new roomful of furniture would be the dream come true but it’s not always the most practical either. There are small ways to freshen up a space with a few new items.

Introduce some fresh pillows to your space. Ones with color, pattern, texture or a fun print like this Thomas Paul elephant pillow will make a great impact. Having new pillows will give your sofa or bed a brand new look – and using a punchy color will make it sing like Spring!

Add a few new frames onto your entry console with photos or quotes that are sunny and bright! Loving these new striped frames we just got in!

Adorn your mantle with a bit of sparkle. These lovely mercury glass candlesticks are perfect all year long – the shine will brighten up your room!

Put some simple blooms from your local floral shop in Spring vases. Place in a windowsill or on a nightstand to freshen things up. Florals and greenery will always liven up a space.

Light up your space with a gorgeous new lamp. A patterned shade will shake things up a bit!

A few new accessories for the coffee table will be the perfect addition for Spring. Make them bright and happy! Can you tell we are loving stripes right now?

Add a garden stool as a little side table to your favorite reading chair or tuck in under a console or nesting tables. Add a pretty tray and your favorite book to complete the look.

There are so many simple ways to freshen up your space and the changes or additions can be small but happy!

With spring on it’s way, fresh flowers help brighten things up in these last few dreary days of winter. They can also inspire a facelift or remodel in our homes!

Pretty vibrant pinks inspire a bright color palette.

Love the calming shades of these succulents. Let it inspire a room or just one piece with different shades of pillows.

Muted shades of pink are very pretty and peaceful. Make a statement with your sofa or be more subtle and add the detail to your window treatments.

A bright orangey red… persimmon, flame, you name it. This is definitely a statement maker!

Neutrals – simple and elegant. This Thomas O’Brien room is a great example of how subtle is classic and beautiful.

Let your florals inspire your artwork. Keep bright colors contained in one place while letting the softer shades fill your walls and drapes.

Succulents bring so many beautiful colors, greens, blues, oranges. Let these inspire your room.
